Basketball is a team sport invented by a physical education teacher in 1891. He comes from Massachusetts and is called James Naismith. At the time, the sport had only 13 rules. The aim of the game was to deposit the ball in a deep-seated fishing crate. Each team had one set up 3m5 off the ground on a gym ramp. This sport is played with a spherical ball.
Basketball has since evolved into one of the world’s most popular activities. It is practiced by hundreds of millions of people around the world, and is now subject to new rules. A match is played in 4 quarters of 10 minutes each, and pits two teams of 5 players against each other on a rectangular pitch. The basket is a 45 cm-diameter hoop located 3.05 m above the ground, as in the early days of the game. A player who manages to put the ball in wins one, two or three points, depending on the circumstances of the throw. The biggest basketball competition is the NBA, played in the United States. It pits the world’s best players against each other.
