France takes its name from the Franks (Germanic peoples) who laid the first foundations at their base in Roman Gaul. The name “Franks” itself comes from the Proto-Germanic frankon, meaning javelin or spear, or perhaps from the word “Frank” meaning “free man”. The French national flag has three colors: blue, white and red. Its capital is Paris and its official language is French, which has been the administrative language since 1539.
This capital is famous for its shopping, its classic art museums (including the Louvre) and its monuments such as the Eiffel Tower. The country is also famous for its wines and gastronomy. Its rich history is evidenced by the cave paintings in the Lascaux caves, the Roman theater in Lyon and the immense Château de Versailles.
On January 1, 2022, the population of France will be approximately 67.8 million. The country shares borders with Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, Monaco and Andorra in Europe, and with Brazil, Suriname and the Netherlands in the Americas. France has extensive coastlines in the Atlantic, Mediterranean, Pacific and Indian oceans, giving it the world’s second largest exclusive economic zone.
