A city can be likened to an ecosystem which, like the environment, is in constant interaction with its host. The word “Ville” is derived from the Latin “villa”, which from the 5th to the 6th century meant “a group of houses built on a villa”.

The difficulty in defining a city lies in its specific characteristics: its size, its various functions and, above all, its political autonomy. However, the Robert dictionary defines a city as “a geographical and social environment formed by a large number of buildings housing inhabitants who, for the most part, work within the urban area”. What’s more, the history of each city or urban area remains an essential element.
The first known major towns appeared at the end of the Neolithic period. These different towns may have more than 15,000 inhabitants, cover an area of more than a few square kilometres, and are planned and organised in the shape of ellipses and concentric circles.
