The Little Mermaid is an animated Disney film based on the fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen, released in 1989. It tells the story of a mermaid princess who takes a keen interest in human culture.
Ariel is the princess of the kingdom of Atlantica, under the reign of King Triton. But she is no longer comfortable with her underwater life and dreams of visiting the human world. With his best friend, Polochon, Ariel often goes on expeditions to collect objects from the surface and then visits a seagull.
His father warned him of the dangers of even distant contact with humans. But Ariel ignores him and travels to the surface to watch a party on a ship for the birthday of a prince, with whom she falls instantly in love. When the boat sinks, Prince Eric falls off and Ariel saves him by bringing him back to dry land. She sings to save him, but when Eric starts to wake up, Ariel runs away.
But Ariel can’t get Prince Eric out of her mind. She decides to contact Ursula, a sea witch who can transform her into a human. But the services provided by the witch are not free. In exchange for the transformation, Ariel must give up her voice and become mute.
The Little Mermaid has been a great success from its first broadcast to the present day. The animated film has been given a sequel, The Little Mermaid: Back to the Ocean. A film adaptation is also in the pipeline for release in 2023.
