The pony is usually seen as a miniature horse. However, it goes far beyond this stereotype. Size does matter, of course, as any adult horse measuring 148 cm or less is classified as a pony by the Fédération équestre internationale. However, ponies can be much shorter than 127 cm. They are distinguished from horses by their more massive, wider bodies, shorter legs and thicker coats and manes.

Pony varieties
There are several varieties of pony. Some of the best known are:
- Français de Selle.
- Highland.
- Connemara.
- Fjord.
- Dartmoor.
- Haflinger.
- Landais.
- Pottok, etc.
This animal can be characterised by different colours, sizes, bones and morphologies. What’s more, they are extraordinarily intelligent and sociable animals.
Because of their small size and great docility, ponies are perfect for riding with children.
The pony’s needs
Ponies have an average life expectancy of 35 years. They are generally robust and strong animals. They rarely fall ill. Nevertheless, the wide variety has led to the development of certain weaknesses in several breeds.
To do this, their food must be rigorously controlled. To maintain their well-being, ponies need rations with a good balance of proteins, fats, carbohydrates, minerals and vitamins. As they are very affectionate animals, they also need special care, a well-equipped shelter to protect them from bad weather, and a good place to exercise.
