Over the course of prehistory, man has undergone many changes and developed many skills, such as hunting and gathering, the construction of tools and habitats, as well as communication and social organisation. Prehistory was also marked by the emergence of different cultures and civilisations, which have left numerous archaeological traces.
Neanderthal man appeared in Europe around 2 million years ago. Neanderthal man was a hunter-gatherer who lived mainly by hunting and gathering plants. He was also able to make stone tools and build dwellings.
Modern man, Homo sapiens, appeared around 300,000 years ago. Modern man had a superior intelligence to his predecessors, and was capable of making more complex tools, travelling long distances and communicating more effectively.
