A volcano is a bundle of magmatic rock, lava and ash that rises from the Earth’s surface. They are formed when the Earth’s crust is pushed by the movements of tectonic plates, causing magma and gases to rise through cracks in the crust.

There are two main types of volcano: effusive and explosive. Effusive volcanoes are characterised by an eruption of fluid lava that flows slowly over the Earth’s surface. They are generally less dangerous than explosive volcanoes, which erupt violently and expel ash, volcanic bombs and flaming clouds.
Volcanoes can be very destructive when they erupt, causing landslides, fires and tsunamis. They can also cause atmospheric disturbances, such as the formation of ash clouds, which can block out the sun and reduce the temperature at the Earth’s surface.
