Pokémon is actually a Japanese franchise created by Satoshi Tajiri in 1996. The Pokémon concept was first popularized through card games, video games and series published by Nintendo. Nearly 250 million Pokémon trading card games were sold in 2010. In the world of video games, the figure soars to over 30 million copies sold.
The franchise also has a strong presence in the manga and audiovisual markets. The animated series version of Pokémon tells the story of Sacha Ketchum and his faithful companion Pikachu (a rather Kawaii Pocket Monster).
They travel the world and take part in various tournaments to find other Pokémons to capture and tame. The Sacha character shares his first name with his creator Sacha (which is short for Satoshi in Japan).
As a young man, he used to breed grasshoppers for racing competitions. He realized that the older the locusts were, the better his chances of leading them to victory and selling them to the highest bidder. Little by little, he came up with the idea of using them as inspiration for Pokémon.

April 1997. In France, the Pokémon series was first broadcast in 1999 on Fox Kids and in 2000 on TF1. Production of this anime crossed the 1,000-episode threshold in Japan in 2017.
In the gaming world, Nintendo remains the leading publisher of Pokémon games for Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo DS, Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo Wii U.
There are 905 Pokémons spread over eight generations, without taking into account mega evolutions, primo-resurgence and other known forms of emancipation. Pokémons are classified into 18 types, each with its own strengths and weaknesses.
